How To Remove A Piano

Jun 27, 2023

Moving to a new location is a complex process, and when it involves relocating a precious item like a piano, it becomes more challenging. Pianos are not just heavy; they're finely tuned instruments that can be easily damaged. That is why hiring a professional removalist is the best course of action to ensure proper handling. However, if you prefer a DIY approach, we will break down the process of piano removal into manageable steps to help you move your instrument safely and effectively.

Assessing The Situation

1. Measure Doorways And Pathways

Measure the dimensions of all doorways, hallways, staircases and any other spaces through which the piano needs to be moved. Ensure that there is enough clearance to accommodate the size and shape of the piano.

2. Procure The Necessary Equipment

For moving a piano, you'll require:

  • Piano Moving Skid Board or Dolly: To provide the necessary support and ease of movement.
  • Heavy-Duty Straps: To secure the piano to the moving equipment.
  • Thick Blankets or Padding: To protect the piano from potential scratches, dents or damage.
  • Screwdriver: May be required to disassemble specific parts of the piano.

Removing the Piano

1. Get Adequate Help

It is strongly recommended to enlist the help of at least three to four strong people. Make sure everyone is aware of the plan and their respective roles during the removal process.

2. Secure the Piano

Cover the piano with thick blankets or padding and secure it with straps. Pay particular attention to the corners and any protruding sections. If your piano has any removable parts, consider disassembling them to avoid accidental damage.

3. Employ Safe Lifting Techniques

Once your piano is appropriately secured, it's time to move it. To avoid potential injuries, always remember to engage your leg muscles instead of relying on your back when lifting heavy objects. Also, ensure that everyone lifts simultaneously and maintains a steady pace.

4. Place The Piano On The Moving Equipment

Next, carefully position the piano on the skid board or dolly. The placement should ensure that the weight of the piano is balanced and stable. Use the straps to secure the piano firmly in place.

5. Navigating The Pathway

Moving the piano should be a slow and steady process. Avoid quick movements that could destabilise the piano. Be conscious of obstacles, uneven surfaces or steps.

6. Loading The Piano Onto The Vehicle

Loading the piano into your truck requires extra caution. Using a sturdy ramp or planks, guide the piano carefully into the vehicle. This step often presents the highest risk of injury or damage, so take your time.

7. Securing The Piano For Transit

Position the piano against the wall of the truck and fasten it securely with straps. All disassembled parts should be packed separately, wrapped in padding and stowed safely for transit.

8. Unloading And Installation

Upon reaching your destination, the process needs to be carefully reversed. Unload and move the piano to its new location with your team using the appropriate tools. Once positioned, ensure the piano is stable before beginning the reassembly and tuning process.
